Thought for the Day by Dave Howarth
(Lead Pastor Holy Cross Church)

I wonder if you’ve noticed how often in the Bible God changes a person’s name?
It happens to Abram and to Jacob in Genesis. It’s not actually likely that God changed Saul’s name to Paul (he probably used both), but Jesus does change Simon’s name:
Jesus looked at him and said, "You are Simon son of John. You will be called Cephas" (which, when translated, is Peter). (John 1v42).

Names in the ancient world were highly significant. Usually they were chosen because they meant something and related to the character of the person. When Jesus meets Simon His first act is to rename him ‘Peter’ meaning ‘rock.’ On Peter’s apostolic testimony and ministry Jesus would build His church.

What a massive change that must have been for Simon! Going through life up till then as Simon, only to have it changed in a moment. New passport, new driving license, correcting family members and friends endlessly for years afterwards.

In all seriousness, it’s a reminder that Jesus is all about change. That’s hard because many of us dislike change. And church is often a place people expect there to be very little change. But while God Himself does not change, that doesn’t mean He is static. Rather, He is radically committed to changing us. He may not give us a new name, but He is working in us as individuals and as whole churches to change us into the likeness of His Son. He is also shaping and changing how our churches operate. That’s for the better, for such outward changes happen in order to help us change inwardly – and to help more from outside the church to have life-changing encounters with Jesus. Can you thank God for change?
Dave
