Thought for the Day by Matt Jones
(Associate Minister for Music)

Picture
We are continuing in our series running up to Christmas when I give a thought for the day focussing on lyrics from some of our most beloved Christmas Carols.
Part 2
Last time we looked at Hark the Herald, learning about some fantastic truths related to God dwelling with us (see 04/11 if you missed it).

Today we are looking at a verse from See amid the winters snow:

Lo, within a manger lies
He who built the starry skies;
He who throned in height sublime
Sits amid the cherubim.

This carol might not be one that you are familiar with, so do give it a listen. Here we are thinking about God’s humility and God’s majesty. Let’s start with the latter, it will help give context. God is the almighty, the King of creation, the one who exists before time, whom created time. There is no-one like Him, or above him in authority. He is the one who built the starry skies. Think about the intense power that exists in the Sun, our own star. You can hardly look at it without damage to your eyes! And yet our sun is a baby compared to other stars in our known universe. And God created each one of them. He is indeed mighty beyond compare! When Jesus ascended to heaven after the resurrection, He sat down at the Father’s right hand, surrounded by magnificent heavenly creatures such as the cherubim. Such a God we would be astounded by if we met face to face.

And yet, God the son in astounding humility stoops down to earth, taking the form of a human, and isn’t born in the best palace that the world has to offer. No, he lies within a manger. A place where animals feed. Think about the last time you visited a farm, or the smells of the country. They aren’t really that pleasant, hardly dignified. And yet the one built the starry skies, throned in the heights, sitting amid the cherubim, chooses to identify with the lowliest of the low. Why? It is who He is, the God of love. Worship Him today!
