Thought for the Day
by Héloïse Hearn, Goldstone Church
(part of a series of daily reflections based on Psalm 23)

Picture

  Psalm 23: 1-6

1  The LORD is my shepherd, I lack nothing.
2  He makes me lie down in green pastures, he leads me beside quiet waters,
3  He refreshes my soul.
He guides me along the right paths for his name’s sake.
4  Even though I walk through the darkest valley, I will fear no evil, for you are with me;
your rod and your staff, they comfort me.
5  You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies.
You anoint my head with oil; my cup overflows.
6  Surely your goodness and love will follow me all the days of my life,
and I will dwell in the house of the LORD for ever.

“Surely goodness and love will follow me all the days of my life” (Psalm 23: 6)
‘If we don’t chase things – sometimes the things following us can catch up.’ (from ‘Emily Climbs’ by L.M. Montgomery). Perhaps this is a bit of a random thing to pop into my mind when thinking about this verse – but it seemed appropriate! When we are busy all the time, rushing on to the next thing, do we give the things following us a chance to catch up?
This verse says “goodness” and “love” are following us. They are pursuing us. We have a chance to slow down and take time to appreciate all of God’s goodness in our lives and all the small evidences of his love.
It seems to be human nature to look forward to hard things being over. We might say or think, ‘When this is over, then I’ll be happy, content, thankful…’ Well, this verse says that goodness and love follow us all the days of our lives. So, let us look for things to be thankful for right now!
Christ be with me, Christ within me,
Christ behind me, Christ before me,
Christ beside me, Christ to win me,
Christ to comfort and restore me.
Christ beneath me, Christ above me,
Christ in quiet, Christ in danger,
Christ in hearts of all that love me,
Christ in mouth of friend and stranger.

(From St. Patrick’s Breastplate)
