Thought for the Day by Matt Jones

PART 3
We are continuing in our series running up to Christmas when I give a thought for the day focussing on lyrics from some of our most beloved Christmas Carols.

Last time we looked at See Amid the Winter's Snow, learning about God’s humility and God’s majesty (see 18/11 if you missed it).

Today we are looking at a verse from Silent night:
Silent night, holy night!
Shepherds quake at the sight
Glories stream from heaven afar
Heavenly hosts sing Alleluia!
Christ, the Saviour is born
Christ, the Saviour is born

Have a read of Luke 2:8-15 for the encounter. I love this moment in the Bible! Because it is one of the those moments where heaven breaks into this world in a special and glorious way. Imagine you are up on the Downs tonight, it’s probably a little chilly, a little windy, and of course deserted. You might be able to relate to the shepherds then, being a shepherd wasn’t spectacular and back then it was one of the most undesirable jobs. And yet it is to these shepherds that some of the greatest news ever told was given.
Imagine the dark sky suddenly lights up with such light and life that it would make the Aurora Borealis look dull. Imagine the glory of hearing the ‘actual heavenly choir’. And the message: “Today in the town of David a Saviour has been born to you; he is the Messiah, the Lord”.

We can easily pass over a verse. That one is packed with rich, glorious truth. Christ is the fulfilled promise of the Old Testament; the son of David. Christ is the Saviour, to save us from our sins. Christ has been born for you (even you shepherds!) Christ is the Messiah, God’s special anointed appointee. Christ is the Lord, He is God made flesh.

Shepherds probably did quake at the sight. To be honest I’m not sure that night was very silent. But that carol does help to remind us that the Saviour has been born.
Matt
