Thought for the Day by Dave Howarth (Lead Pastor Holy Cross Church)

The Death of Ananias (Raphael, 1515; Victoria and Albert Museum)

Peter said to Ananias, ‘“What made you think of doing such a thing? You have not lied just to human beings but to God.” When Ananias heard this, he fell down and died. And great fear seized all who heard what had happened.’ (Acts 5.4-5)

One of the biggest problems with modern Christianity is that we have lost our sense of God’s limitless perfection and moral purity. Correspondingly, we have also lost our sense of the gravity of our sin.

When we these realities are real for us, we will fall on God’s mercy in Christ with fresh relief; and we will follow John Owen’s advice: “Do you mortify; do you make it your daily work; be always at it whilst you live; cease not a day from this work; be killing sin or it will be killing you” (The Mortification of Sin, 1656).
