Thought for the Day by Phil Washington (BH Member)

Godly Comfort

‘God – Comforts the downcast’  2 Corinthians 7:6

The apostle Paul was understandably downcast and low. He’d had ‘no rest, been harassed at every turn, known conflicts from without and fears from within’ (v5). Who says that the Christian life is a bed of roses? Every true believer feels low at times – even the great apostle himself!

So very often, like Paul here in Second Corinthians, the reasons are obvious, but that’s not always the case. Paul though bounces back, and within less than two verses he is knowing a ‘joy greater than ever’ (v7). What causes this change of mood? Verse 6 gives us the answer. ‘But God, who comforts the downcast, comforted us’. It was God’s goodness that that comforted Paul. But how? It was through Paul’s beloved friend Titus, who came along with good news (v6). Note that even the presence of Titus brought comfort, but the good news of the Corinthian’s ‘longing, deep sorrow and ardent concern’, was what really opened the floodgates of joy (v7).

Are you feeling a bit jaded, downcast and low? Ask God to comfort you. Or might you be the ‘Titus’, who will bring God’s comfort into someone’s life today.
