Thought for the Day by Simon James-Morse (Minister of Goldstone Church)The Son-Gift
For a child is born to us, a son is given to us. The government will rest on his shoulders. And he will be called: Wonderful Counsellor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace. His government and its peace will never end. He will rule with fairness and justice from the throne of his ancestor David for all eternity. The passionate commitment of the Lord of Heaven’s Armies will make this happen! (Isaiah 9:6-7 NLT) In 700 BC, the nation of Israel was surrounded by vicious enemies. The people had forgotten God. Darkness, death, and despair filled the land. Isaiah declared that the solution would arrive in a new-born baby – who would be a king. Indeed, He would be the King of kings and would rule the world. This king has four titles describing what He can do for us: Wonderful Counsellor. This King has all wisdom and understanding; life’s complexities that are beyond us are not beyond Jesus. When we need wisdom, let us be quick to go to the Wonderful Counsellor. He knows what to do. Mighty God. This King is God in the flesh. He is powerful enough to save us - completely. Whatever we need, He knows what to do and He can do it. Everlasting Father. This King is a loving father in the way that He cares for us. He provides, protects, shepherds, cares, understands, listens. Whatever our greatest concern, let us bring it to Him. He knows what to do and He cares about each one of us - eternally. Prince of Peace. Jesus takes our fears, worries, guilt, and our hopelessness, and replaces them with His divine peace. He knows what to do and He surrounds us in peace because He is the Prince of Peace. The unusual baby was the ultimate solution for ancient Israel – and is our solution too. So, in every situation, let us call out to Him, look to Him, and run to Him without delay. Jesus Christ, the Son of the Living God knows what to do and seeks a personal relationship with each one of us. Thank you, Lord Jesus, that You let the light from Your face shine into our hearts. Humbly we ask that You strengthen us; not only physically but spiritually too. Help us each day as we face the uncertainties of earthly life. Keep us from giving in to weakness; may we sense the power of Your Holy Spirit constantly with us. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
