Thought for the Day by Stephen Demetriou (Youth Minister)How would you define kindness? I think it’s quite a hard thing to describe… It’s one of those things you’ll know it when you see it! So go and have a read of 2 Samuel 9:1-13 – look out for kindness as you do, then come back! Have you read 2 Samuel 9:1-13?! THAT is Kindness. David is king, the old king, Saul is dead… and if you remember Saul was David’s long term arch nemesis, Saul hated David… and so the surprise of v1 is HUGE! “Is there anyone still left of the house of Saul to whom I can show kindness.” THAT is Kindness. As one of David’s first acts as king he wants to bless Saul’s grandson Mephibosheth and we’re talking a lavish blessing here! 1. A Home in David’s Kingdom. (v7) 2. Eating at the King’s table – fellowship with David (v7) 3. Treated as a son of the King. (v11) THAT is kindness. It costs David, and just think of how undeserving Mephibosheth is, this guy is related to Saul (Saul’s name is mentioned 7 times, a reminder of that past enmity). This guy is (v3) lame and he’s from nowhere (Lo Debar = Nowhere (v4)) in other words, Mephibosheth has no power, no money, no status, nothing to offer – being kind to him makes no political or economic sense. And yet David blesses him. Wow. David blesses him like he’s been blessed. Reflecting on his life in 2 Samuel 22:51 David praises God for God’s kindness to him, see once we’ve tasted kindness we share kindness. That’s true for us too. We are very much like Mephibosheth. Nobodies, from nowhere, with nothing to offer – even enemies of God. God being gracious to us makes no sense whatsoever! And yet our King, King Jesus is KIND to us. He goes to die on a cross for us so that we can be brought Home into God’s Kingdom, so that we can eat at the King’s table AND so that we are treated as sons & daughters of the Lord Almighty. THAT IS KINDNESS. It was costly for Jesus, His own precious blood and still He did that for us. Marvel at the King’s kindness today! And as we have received and tasted God’s kindness, let us share kindness. Kindness is truly powerful especially in Lockdown, who could you be kind to today? It might be someone who doesn’t deserve it, or someone who doesn’t love you back but still we’re kind like our God is kind. Kindness is genuine not looking for reward or anything in return, it’s blessing for blessings sake like David, like Jesus... So who could you go out of your way to be kind to today?
