Thought for the Day by Simon James-Morse

Fullness in Christ
In Bible times, the city of Colossae was part of a major trading route. As a result, numerous spiritual beliefs and practices were shared. One of those thoughts was ‘Gnosticism’ – a belief that sees God as so mystical and unavailable to humans that intermediaries are needed. For many people, including early Christ-followers, Jesus was viewed as just another of many spiritual intermediaries.
In his letter to the Colossians, the Apostle Paul cut through the confusion of these spiritual practices with a profound statement:
For in Christ all the fullness of the Deity lives in bodily form, and in Christ you have been brought to fullness. He is the head over every power and authority.” (Colossians 2:9-10)
Christ is enough! He is the physical evidence of the true God. There is no need to look elsewhere. Striving for a full and rich life is complete in Christ. No other spiritual intermediaries are needed. He is supreme over all others.
Our society today is like ‘Colossae on steroids’! Our modern technologies circulate all sorts of human experiences and beliefs. Even worse, the diversity of these spiritual experiences can creep into our understanding of God and distort the fullness of our personal, love-relationship with Jesus. It can be easy to stray into questions like, ‘Am I doing enough for God to love me?’
But it’s not about us; it’s all about who Jesus is, and His unconditional love for us. We need Paul’s timely reminder: Jesus is supreme and complete. His fullness is freely available to each one of us. So…
“Let your roots grow down into him, and let your lives be built on him. Then your faith will grow strong in the truth you were taught, and you will overflow with thankfulness.” (Colossians 2:7 NLT)

Prayer
Dear Heavenly Father, how majestic You are in all of the earth! Nothing compares to You. Hallowed be Thy name. Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done. On earth, as it is in heaven. Give me daily what I need to sustain me. Thank You for the bodily life-example and resurrection of Your Son, Jesus Christ. Forgive me when I turn away and lean upon my own understanding. Today, help me to follow You wholeheartedly.
In Jesus name, Amen.
Simon
