Thought for the Day by Matt Jones (Associate Minister for Music)

Picture
Now - choose life.
 Deuteronomy 30:11-20
For context, Moses has just finished a long sermon. In fact, most of Deuteronomy is Moses speaking to the people about their history, the law that was given and the instruction to continue following God when they enter the land. And we reach this climax where Moses presents to the people a choice: Will the people follow the Lord their God, and the rules and instructions laid out for them?

Verse 19: ‘This day I call the heavens and the earth as witnesses against you that I have set before you life and death, blessings and curses. Now choose life, so that you and your children may live’

It’s really that simple! To love the Lord your God and to follow his commands is to choose life. It’s not too difficult or beyond your reach (v11), it’s not far away (v12). Note, v14. The word is very near you, in your heart and mouth so that you might obey.

As this is a thought for the day, what might we reflect on?

If you are not a Christian, maybe this is a good time to consider the choice presented in v30. Will you choose life; eternal life that is found in Jesus Christ?
If you are a Christian, how might you choose life again today? Which areas of your life do you find yourself not walking in step with Christ? What might you change so that you are living out the life that Jesus has won for you?

Father, I thank you that through your Son you have made a way for me to have eternal life. Thank you you have given your Word that I might know you, and to follow you day by day. Help me today, by your Spirit, in all that I do to choose life. Amen
